I quite like it that I could easily check my portfolio holdings and their performance to the exact % via the app while on the go, which works better than having to login via the desktop browser. The search function is quite fast, and I realised the stocks on my watchlists in the app and the desktop website are automatically synced! If you are familiar with TradingView, you will be happy to note that the TradingView charts are integrated into the app as well. The only suggestion I have is to perhaps create a tab or shortcut on the default interface so that I can view the portfolio quickly, as the current users now have to click on Me tab and then the Portfolio tab in order to view the holdings.

After using Poems 2.0 for some time, I now find Poems 3.0 a very much user-friendly app. It's easy to navigate the UI. The stock etc charts graphics are a delight to view! I like the "portfolio" section whereby you can look up personal info or functions to transact. This app could be improved further to include the retrieval and submission of online forms for trading in US stocks. A highly recommended and reliable app for your investment needs!

Poems was my first broker and have remained my number 1 choice throughout my investment journey of more than 10 years. This is saying something considering the plethora of alternatives in the market these days. I started with the browser application and have definitely gone a long way culminating in this latest poems app. It is clear that poems have incorporated customer feedback and competitive features to make this latest offering the best in industry!

New improved POEMS 3 user interface looks fresher compared to previous version such as color scheme and font types, it allows me to better organizing the stocks as it offers many different categories. Not only that I can even invest with my CPF and SRS funds :)

I was immediately captivated by the new POEMS mobile 3 interface. The new features look awesome! Comparatively, with other brokerage app I use, this new interface is far superior to version 2. Navigate through the app is a lot easier now. In version 2, it is kind of difficult to identity the different indicators. But with this new look, it look sleeker and more vibrant with the colours. Moreover, it is so amazing now that Trading view can be connected directly to POEMS. In the past, I have to open 2 apps. It is easier to look at the counters at a glance. Great user interface experience! Thank you POEMS!

Very easy to manoeuvre around the app. Simple and easy to use. Real time update of the funds performance. At one glance able to see the funds which is very convenient. There is a community tab for all the like-minded to share and get to know each other. Highly recommend app to all!

FAQ

US stocks represent shares of companies listed on major US stock exchanges like NYSE and NASDAQ.

You can buy US stocks by opening an account with us. Upon successful account approval, you will be able to purchase US stocks via our signature trading platform, POEMS.

Introduced by PhillipCapital in 1996, POEMS is Singapore’s first internet trading platform..

With access to over 26 exchanges around the world, our platform offers a seamless and reliable trading experience.

The major US stock exchanges are:

  • New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)
  • National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ)
  • American Stock Exchange (AMEX)
  • Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)

Yes, POEMS gives users access to NYSE, NASDAQ, AMEX & CBOE.

Yes, the same rate applies to equities traded on all US exchanges. For options, the rate is US$0.888 per contract, subject to a minimum of US$2.88 per order will apply.

The benefits include diversification and exposure to global companies. Conversely, some risks include currency fluctuations and market volatility.

Investing in US stocks via Singapore offers several advantages, such as access to a wide range of large, well-established companies in a robust economy. This provides opportunities for portfolio diversification, as US companies span multiple sectors and industries. Exposure to growth in innovation-driven industries like technology is also a key advantage.

All investors holding foreign stocks are exposed to currency risk, meaning their investment value could decrease due to unfavourable exchange rate fluctuations. This risk arises because the stock’s value is tied to a foreign currency, and any depreciation in that currency against your home currency can reduce returns.

Blue-chip stocks are shares of large, established companies known for reliable performance and financial stability. These companies are typically leaders in their respective industries.

There is a 30% withholding tax on dividends from US stocks for non-US investors.

Taxi implications depend on your country’s tax treaties with the US and Singapore. It is best for you to consult a professional tax advisor for specifics.

US indices such as the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and NASDAQ Composite track the performance of groups of US stocks:

S&P 500: Tracks the performance of 500 large US companies across various sectors, serving as a broad market benchmark. It is weighted by market capitalisation, with larger companies having more influence

Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA): Tracks 30 major US companies, mostly large, well-established firms. It is price-weighted, meaning higher stock prices have more impact on the index

NASDAQ Composite: Tracks over 3,000 companies listed on the NASDAQ, with a focus on technology and growth stocks, making it more volatile and tech-heavy than other indices

While you cannot buy indices directly, you can, however, invest in funds such as  Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) or mutual funds, which mirror the performance of the US indices. Both of which are easily accessible through POEMS.

Investing in individual stocks allows you to focus on specific companies you believe will perform well, offering targeted exposure to specific sectors or industries. This can potentially lead to higher returns if your stock picks perform well, but it also comes with increased risk due to lack of diversification. You are exposed to the fortunes of a single company, which can be more volatile.

On the other hand, Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) provide diversification by pooling a wide range of stocks into one fund. This reduces individual stock risk, as the performance is tied to a broader basket of companies within an index or sector. While ETFs may offer more stable returns over time, the potential for massive gains may be lower compared to selecting high-growth individual stocks.

POEMS allows you to trade both individual stocks and ETFs within the same platform, giving you the flexibility to choose based on your risk tolerance, investment goals, and strategy. Whether you prefer the potential for high returns with individual stocks or the stability and diversification of ETFs, POEMS provides you with the tools to implement your investment approach.

Non-US investors must provide identification, proof of address, and tax documentation (e.g., W-8BEN) when investing in US stocks from Singapore.

Additionally, overseas investors will also be required to undergo the required Customer Account Review (“CAR”) and/or Customer Knowledge Assessment (“CKA”) before trading Specified Investment Products (“SIPs”).

Dividends are a portion of company profits distributed to shareholders, typically paid quarterly.

POEMS provide stock tracking tools, market updates, and research materials on US stocks.  Community channels for insights and discussions are also integrated into the POEMS platform for easy access.

It does not have any regard to your specific investment objectives, financial situation and any of your particular needs. You should read the Prospectus and the accompanying Product Highlights Sheet (“PHS”) for key features, key risks and other important information of the Products and obtain advice from a financial adviser (“FA“) pursuant to a separate engagement before making a commitment to invest in the Products. In the event that you choose not to obtain advice from a FA, you should assess whether the Products are suitable for you before proceeding to invest. A copy of the Prospectus and PHS are available from PCM, any of its Participating Dealers (“PDs“) for the ETF, or any of its authorised distributors for the unit trust managed by PCM.

An ETF is not like a typical unit trust as the units of the ETF (the “Units“) are to be listed and traded like any share on the Singapore Exchange Securities Trading Limited (“SGX-ST”). Listing on the SGX-ST does not guarantee a liquid market for the Units which may be traded at prices above or below its NAV or may be suspended or delisted. Investors may buy or sell the Units on SGX-ST when it is listed. Investors cannot create or redeem Units directly with PCM and have no rights to request PCM to redeem or purchase their Units. Creation and redemption of Units are through PDs if investors are clients of the PDs, who have no obligation to agree to create or redeem Units on behalf of any investor and may impose terms and conditions in connection with such creation or redemption orders. Please refer to the Prospectus of the ETF for more details.

Investments are subject to investment risks including the possible loss of the principal amount invested. The purchase of a unit in a fund is not the same as placing your money on deposit with a bank or deposit-taking company. There is no guarantee as to the amount of capital invested or return received. The value of the units and the income accruing to the units may fall or rise. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of the future or likely performance of the Products. There can be no assurance that investment objectives will be achieved.

Where applicable, fund(s) may invest in financial derivatives and/or participate in securities lending and repurchase transactions for the purpose of hedging and/or efficient portfolio management, subject to the relevant regulatory requirements. PCM reserves the discretion to determine if currency exposure should be hedged actively, passively or not at all, in the best interest of the Products.

The regular dividend distributions, out of either income and/or capital, are not guaranteed and subject to PCM’s discretion. Past payout yields and payments do not represent future payout yields and payments. Such dividend distributions will reduce the available capital for reinvestment and may result in an immediate decrease in the net asset value (“NAV”) of the Products. Please refer to <www.phillipfunds.com> for more information in relation to the dividend distributions.
